The Social Studies Department reflects the community’s belief that the study of the social sciences can foster in students the development of skills, attitudes, and behaviors that will enable them to function as effective citizens in an ever-changing and more interdependent world.  These skills include the ability to think and read critically, to write and speak persuasively, and to effectively work in groups.  Therefore, we provide a four-year program for all students.  Students are required to earn three credits in Social Studies, including Social Studies 9, United States History, and Civics.  In addition, the Social Studies Department plays a major role in preparing students for the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, especially in the areas of Reading and Writing Across the Disciplines.
