The HVRHS art department provides enrichment and growth through a variety of classes. Most offerings are studio classes that challenge students to be creative problem solvers through rigorous project-based learning.
Course Offerings include:
- Beginning Painting & Advanced Painting
- Drawing One & Drawing Two
- Computer Painting & Computer Animation
- Color & Design & Sculpture
- Art History 1 & Art History 2
- The Art Department is currently proposing two dynamic course offerings: Mixed Media Photography and Visual Storytelling.
Additionally, a robust Independent Study program is ongoing, with several students pursuing advanced art practices, under the broad umbrella of Portfolio Development.
Students benefit from several annual field trips. These trips include visits to The Clark Art Institute and other museums in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Each spring, the sculpture class visits the PepsiCo Sculpture gardens in Purchase, New York.
Guest artists are also a regular component of the school year. Local artists who have shared their expertise with students include Pieter Lefferts, Scott Bricher and Ed Martinez.
The annual Blue and The Gold at The White exhibit is the premier showcase for HVRHS student’s visual art. Held annually at the White Gallery in Lakeville, students display works in various mediums, including acrylic, watercolor, egg tempera, charcoal, graphite, ink, printmaking, photography and sculpture. Professional artists serve as judges, awarding prizes for best in Painting, Photography and Sculpture.
The Sharon Woman’s Club makes a generous financial commitment to the Art Department, by awarding an annual cash prize to a deserving student.
The Contemporary Visual Arts Scholarship is an incredible opportunity for a HVRHS senior accepted into a four-year art program. The CVAS provides forty thousand dollars dispersed over four years.
Recent graduates have gone on to prestigious art programs. These schools include: Pratt, Ringling School of Art, Lyme Academy of Art, Maine College of Art, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Parsons, Full Sail University, Florence Academy of Art (Rome), Fashion Institute of Technology, San Francisco Art Institute, New York University / Tisch School of the Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design.
