~ Announcements for Friday, May 4, 2012 ~

NO LATE BUS TODAY

ATHLETICS FOR TODAY (Friday):

Baseball vs. Northwestern at home and Softball vs. Northwestern away are still on for today! Both fields are playable and games start at 3:45 pm.

Golf at Hotchkiss today after school.

Girls Lacrosse today 3-5 pm.

JUNIOR PROM:
The junior prom will be held on Saturday, May 19th at Crystal Peak in Winsted from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm. The theme is Classic Hollywood. Tickets are $65.00 each and will be sold by the junior class Monday, May 1 – Friday, May 11. Checks can be made out to HVRHS.

SPIRIT SQUAD:
The Spirit Squad is announcing sign-ups for the first annual Powder Puff Football game. The event will be held Friday, May 25th after school. Junior and seniors girls are eligible and final roster will be determined by lottery. Player must agree to after school practices with their coaches and pay an entry fee of $15.00 which includes a t-shirt. Sign-ups will be outside Mr. Carroll’s office.

LIFEGUARDS WANTED:
The North Canaan Recreation Commission is looking for responsible, reliable lifeguards to work at the outdoor, town pool for the 2012 summer.  You must have current lifeguard, first aid, and CPR certifications.  Responsibilities include but not limited to maintaining safe and clean environment, maintaining alertness throughout shift, enforce and follow pool rules, and provide a positive environment for guests.  Hours may vary.  You must be able to evenings and weekends.  Applicants should email resume and cover letter with references to Adam Bunce, North Canaan Recreation Director, abuncencrecdir@hotmail.com.

TOWN RABIES CLINIC SCHEDULED:
Housatonic Valley FFA, in cooperation with the CT Veterinary Medical Association, is holding its annual rabies vaccination clinic in Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 12:00- 2:00 PM at the Ag-Ed Center at the high school. The fee is $20.00 per animal, cash only. Pet owners who are on public assistance are permitted to have one pet vaccinated at no charge by showing their State Public Assistance Identification Card to the Clinic Coordinator. Written proof of a valid rabies certification must be presented to qualify for a three year vaccination.
Otherwise a one year vaccination will be given. Tags are not sufficient proof for a three year vaccination. According to state law, all dogs and cats, three months of age or older must be vaccinated against rabies.

THE NORTHWEST CORNER:
The HVRHS newspaper, The Northwest Corner, is now available online. To access it, visit www.hvrhs.org, highlight “students” and click on “student publications”. The Northwest Corner will be the second link. Featured now are student-written articles about gas prices, our production of “South Pacific”, book and albums review, and more.

NORTH CANAAN SUMMER JOBS:
Applications are now available for the North Canaan Summer Jobs Program. You may pick one up in the High School main office. Students interested in working this summer must be residents of North Canaan and be 14 years old by July 1, 2012 and not older than 16 by August 1.

SALISBURY SUMMER JOBS:
Applications are now available for the Salisbury Summer Jobs Program. You may pick one up in the High School main office. Students interested in working this summer must be residents of Salisbury and be 14 years old by July 1, 2012 and not older than 16 by August 1.

GOLF:
Housy dropped two matches Thursday at Pequabuck, losing to Terryville and Northwestern. D. Mcgarry 44, J. Huften 52, R. Cunningham 54, N. Camardi 55, J. Rincon 56.

SOFTBALL:

JUNIORS:
It is recommended that all juniors take both the SAT and ACT their junior year.  Please find the following information about registering for these tests.

The SAT’s will be given at HVRHS on May 5th, the deadline for registration is April 6th – students can register at www.collegeboard.org.  The next SAT would be June 2nd with a deadline of May 8th.  If you receive free or reduced lunch, please see your counselor for a fee waiver.

The ACT’s are not given at the high school, but are administered at several local area schools.  The next ACT is April 14th – the late registration deadline is March 23rd.  There is also a test on June 9th with a registration deadline of May 4th.  You can register at www.actstudent.org.  It is recommended that all students sign up for the optional Writing test when taking the exam.  Again, if you receive free or reduced lunch, please see your counselor for a fee waiver.
